July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress declared Independence

Most of us this holiday will be with family and friends attending parades, picnics and firework displays.

That’s because 240 years ago, America declared its freedom and independence from Britain.  Voila! Just like that we had the exclusive right to this lifestyle that we enjoy today.

No, it wasn’t quite that easy.  Britain wouldn’t give us our Freedom and Independence without a fight. It took more than eight years of the American Revolution that required enormous sacrifices and bloodshed from brave and courageous patriots.

For more than two centuries, America has had to fight numerous wars to defend and protect this same Freedom and Independence that was declared in 1776.  Thankfully, brave and courageous men and women continue to pledge their lives for the freedom and safety of others.

This includes my dad, Jack Davis. He served in the Navy on the USS Chevalier during the Korean War. My dad went all over the world during his six years in the Navy. He was always excited to talk about this time to my son Mario. He had numerous stories that we all appreciated hearing.

My dad passed away several years ago and I think of him often. I decided to make this fabric cuff – I couldn’t think of a better way to honor and thank him.

On July 4, when we celebrate with family and friends, take a few moments to reflect on the enormous sacrifices that have taken place for the great American way of life and celebrate the proud title of being an “American.”  I hope you thank those who selflessly protect our Freedom and Independence, day-after-day-after-day.
