Lora Avedian

"I love the look of your Paris tours, I would love to go on one of those myself!

Teach in Paris? I would absolutely do that."

Lora is a mixed-media textile artist living and working in South West London. Captivated by the beauty and patterns of the botanical world, her fluid and intricate work is a story of thread, of texture and of tactility.

Playful hand embroidery with Lora Avedian

Lora is the author of the hand embroidery book Stitch In Bloom, 2021(Hardie Grant/Penguin Random House). In this, Lora’s first book, she explores couching embroidery techniques across a range of projects.

Workshop 1: Full day. A couching class using the technique from book, Stitch In Bloom.

Workshop 2: Half day. Experimental floral embroidery at Au Ver a' Soie. We will be using their beautiful silk threads. Each of us will receive a bundle of their threads.

Workshop 3: Full day. Using our purchases, inspiration and techniques from the week to create a more final piece of work. Also Lora will talk through how she designs her work. She is bringing her pleater and I can't wait to see how she does fabric manipulation with it.

Lora Avedian – Her work sits between the intersection of textile design and art.

Lora’s work finds expression in large scale installations, bespoke commissions as well as a small collection of pieces for the home. She works using hand-guided machine embroidery alongside traditional hand embellished techniques to create each work.

Lora works with institutions (Barbican, The Garden Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, Chelsea Flower Show), retailers (Fortnum and Mason, The New Craftsman), as an artist-in-residence (Howe London, Smythson) and with designers across interiors and fashion. She is the author of the hand embroidery book Stitch In Bloom, 2021(Hardie Grant/Penguin Random House). In this, Lora’s first book, she explores couching embroidery techniques across a range of projects. The emphasis is on British flowers - both wild and more formal. Practical explanations and detail are married with inspiration and ideas about the value of this mindful craft. Lora has a BA in Embroidery and an MA in Mixed Media Textiles from The Royal College of Art.

"It was love at first sight for me! I mean look at those embroidered florals.

Vivid and bold, yet soft and luscious. Amazing what Lora has done to make florals seem alive with couching, ribbon, embroidery and color." Linda
